"DEXA SCAN - still no results"

About: Ayrshire Central Hospital / X-rays & Scans

(as a service user),

My appointment was on 23rd August at Ayrshire Central and that went well and pretty much to my appointment time. Staff were courteous. However some 3 weeks later I still have no result. I have checked with my GP practice just before writing this and still nothing.

I was told that it can take 3 weeks for the results to reach GP's which in this supposed age of Internet and emails etc is appalling. Even allowing for a postal strike on one or two days in the period concerned it is a pathetic standard of service.  I welcome your comments.

Thank-you for your comments on the DEXA service and that on your appointment date everything went well for you. Staff will appreciate the feedback.

I am sorry you have felt disappointed in the length of time it has taken to obtain your DEXA results. The DEXA scans are reported by the reporting DEXA radiographers ussually within 2 -3 days of the scan date. At this point the report is printed and posted to the referrer in this case you mentioned it is your GP. With all postal services within the NHS we know it takes a minimum of 2 weeks to be delivered, this is outwith the control of the DEXA department.

Within the GP practice the GP themselves have the facility to login to their computer system and view the DEXA / Radiology results. But this facility is not available for the receptionists at the GP surgery due to patient confidentiality. All GP surgeries have their own way of informing patient's of their results but in most cases when the receptionist receives the paper copy they will indicate this on their system that results are available and scan the paper copy into the patients electronic notes.

I hope this information has helped. If you wish to discuss further please contact the Radiology department at ACH and I will be happy to discuss any further queries you may have. Thank you again for your feedback.

Update posted by Outpatient DEXA (a service user)

This whole scenario has really been appalling. Firstly it was not my GP who referred me it was my hip replacement surgeon, I had to find this information out for myself.

Wherever I contacted, no-one has been able to tell me what the results are of my scan. I feel I have been pushed from pillar to post.

My surgery still insists that it does not have access to the hospital electronic system so this is a matter that someone needs to clarify.

All in all I am extremely dissatisfied with the level of service provided by all departments involved.

My low opinion is therefore unchanged.
