"Misdiagnosis and lack of communication"

About: Gartnavel Royal Hospital / Mental Health

(as a service user),

I have autism (recently diagnosed) and other mental health issues, I am 24 years old, since I was 14 I have been going backwards and forwards to GP with bowel issues and was told I had IBS. I was eventually a couple of years ago referred to Gastroenterology at Gartnavel Royal and had an Mri and colonoscopy. I was again told slight shading in bowel but nothing to worry about.

I got a phonecall several months ago from a dietician who asked me how my chronic disease was affecting my day to day life and I said I don't have chronic disease, they went over all my personal details and confirmed I did indeed have chronic disease.

I spoke to my GP as my stomach was causing me to lose control of my bowels and I was having accidents. I was sent an appointment for another mri and today I recieved a letter to say that there is no evidence of chronic disease and to send a stool sample however they will continue to focus on my mental health problems.

Gastroenterology? Mental health?

I feel that the service I have been receiving is inapproptiate and dangerous .. I am losing faith in the NHS due to a lack of patient communication and care.

Dear fedupwithitall,

Thank you taking time to share your experience with us and I'm very sorry to read that it hasn't been of the high standard that we strive to deliver, in particular the communication issues you have highlighted between your GP practice and the hospital services that you have been referred to. I fully understand that the different messages you are getting about your current condition will be upsetting and worrying for you.

In this case I would advise that your GP would be the most appropriate person to speak to in order to get the most up to date and accurate information about any tests/scans you have had, the results and any next steps in treatment or care e.g. further referrals. Your GP will also be able to link with mental health services if that is required.

As GP practices operate their own feedback and complaints processes I would also recommend that you get in touch with your GP practice directly (usually through the practice manager) to share feedback about your experience and the issues you are having with communication in particular.

I understand that you say you have lost confidence in the process and as a result you may find contacting your GP practice difficult, therefore I would like to make you aware of a service called PASS (Patient Advice and Support Service) who can support you to give feedback or raise an issue or concern e.g. about your GP practice or any other service. I have added their contact details below. They are an independent service and the information, advice and support they offer is completely free and confidential.

Patient Advice & Support Service | Citizens Advice Scotland (cas.org.uk) or call 0800 917 2127.

I apologise again that your experience hasn't been to the high standard we hope to deliver, but thank you again for taking time to share it with us.

Kind regards,

Lisa Martin, Project Manager,

Patient Experience Public Involvement Team.
