"Dementia awareness"

About: Podiatry / Community Foot Protection Team

(as a carer),

Care was punctual. The podiatry assistant was friendly and helpful. She took time to explain what she was doing.

However, my father has dementia, and I wasn’t confident that the podiatry assistant took this onboard when carrying out procedures. My father may not have been responding as requested to sensations throughout the tests.

The podiatry assistant sought a second opinion so this increased my confidence that any diagnosis was OK.

I feel that dementia may be overlooked, as carers do not always feel able to highlight the situation in front of the patient. Are all staff trained in understanding dementia, I wonder?

Good morning, I would like to thank you personally for taking the time to send us your feedback. As a department we really appreciate the thoughts and suggestions from our service users and their families and carers. You have highlighted an area within our department where we have not had any specific targeted dementia awareness training. I absolutely agree that all staff should have an understanding about the condition and how we can best help and look after all our patients. I have looked into specific Dementia awareness training over the weekend and will make it a priority for all staff to avail of this. We strive to provide the best possible service and with your help and feedback we will hope to be better informed and aware in the future. Wishing you, your father and family all the best Wendy McLaughlin Head of Podiatry Services

Thanks Wendy. Appreciate that. Apparently the Virtual Dementia Tour is very good. There’s a feeling that many in public service should avail of an opportunity to visit when about.
