I attended A&E at the Royal Victoria Hospital, and I was appalled by the lack of masks and the hospital’s abdication of responsibility by not enforcing mask wearing. I was in A&E for 11 hours, surrounded by patients and visitors without masks. I mentioned this on several occasions, telling staff how unsafe I felt in this environment. I was really upset. 

It is essential for hospitals to ensure that masks are worn to protect staff and patients. Failure to enforce this puts vulnerable people at risk and allows selfish people to risk infecting others. Where are your priorities?  I don't think it’s good enough.

My name is Linsey Sheerin, I am the Service Manager for Urgent and Emergency Care at Belfast Trust. I am sorry for the delay in responding to your comments.

It is strongly recommended that you wear a face covering when visiting any Health and Social Care setting, and follow other guidance, such as social distancing and using hand washing facilities, to keep patients, other service users and staff safe. However, some people may find it difficult to wear face coverings. It is important to respect one another and remember that the reasons some may not wear a face covering may not always be visible.

Within the department there are posters promoting the use of face covering and face masks are available at designated points. We cannot enforce mask wearing within the hospital, I am sincerely sorry that you felt unsafe whilst in our care and for the delays you experienced.
