"Autistic child - severe injury"

About: Peterhead Community Hospital / Accident & Emergency Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Accident & Emergency (Emergency Care)

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter fell whilst playing sports and attended Peterhead MIU at the weekend - no patients in department.

Pressed buzzer - staff never even came to door.

I explained my daughter is autistic, in severe pain, fell playing sport and significant injury to shoulder. She was pale, very quiet and in a lot of pain, I had already given her an icepack for drive from field and made a sling out of a jumper.

I was dismissed - again the staff never came to the door and we were told to return home, give medication and attend in a few hours if not better.

Went straight to Aberdeen RACH A&E - seen in timely manner despite busy dept, Care was first class from all involved from reception to medical staff. My daughter had a significant fracture to collar bone and is now in a clavicle brace.

Dear aquariusgz87

Thank you for taking time to comment on your experiences.

It is disappointing for me to read. your comments and I am keen to get some more information from you to allow me to fully investigate what has gone here. This is not the level of service we aspire to provide. If possible, I would be most grateful if you could contact me directly at jennifer.m.walker@aberdeenshire.gov.uk or by calling 01779 478234.

I apologise for the delay in my response appearing. I had written the response and discussed it with the Nurse Manager at Peterhead MIU last Friday. For some reason it looks as though the response was not submitted (I wonder if having written the response I failed to press the submit button).

I see that Jennifer above has already now offered for you to get in touch with her directly and I think this would be the best idea.

This was my original response-

I'm sorry to hear that your experience at Peterhead MIU fell short of what was expected. If you are happy to contact me directly on sue.danby@nhs.scot with your child's name and the date they attended I will pass this onto the Nurse Manager there who will follow this up with staff and get back to you.

From an RACH perspective I am delighted that you were happy with the care and attention you received. I will pass these comments onto the staff who will be delighted to get this positive feedback - it really does reinforce that what they do makes a difference to families. I hope your daughter is recovering well from her injury.

Kind Regards

Further to my previous comments, and our subsequent telephone conversations, I can now confirm that a fuller investigation has been carried out. All staff have been reminded of the importance of ensuring that any child attending the Unit is seen on a face-to-face basis, as timeously as is possible. Furthermore, a programme of additional training around the care and treatment of children has been arranged and has commenced. On behalf of the organisation, I would like to offer you my sincere apologies that the high-quality care we aspire to, has fallen short on this occasion.
