"Catheter care"

About: Health and Social Care Northern Ireland

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

My catheter blocks every 2 weeks. I don't know when it happens as I can't feel anything  but the nurses try everything to stop it but unfortunately they can't fix it. I have to go into the Emergency Department by ambulance and they get me onto a trolley and I wait for someone to fix it. I was in last week. Everyone is kind but I'd rather not be there. I'm always very tired for a few days after. Be good if there was something else could be done

Dear Linjt76,

Thank you for sharing your experience of having a catheter. I am sorry to hear you are having issues with your catheter repeatedly becoming blocked. That is such an upheaval for you every 2 weeks between having to go to hospital, having to wait for care at the Emergency Department, and then the days afterwards of tiredness.

In the Public Health Agency we are working with a team in the Department of Health to improve experience of residents in Care Homes who use catheters. Your experience has highlighted the importance of this work to improve catheter care and to ideally resolve catheter problems within the Care Home. This work will support the nurses in your Care Home that have been doing everything they can to help you, and will support staff across all Care Homes as they care for residents with catheters and when they need to communicate details to the hospital.

It is good to know that when you have had to go to the Emergency Department that you are happy with the care you have received from the ambulance staff, doctors and nurses in the hospital. Kindness and staff attitude are so important when receiving care. We will ensure your feedback will inform our work on improving the experience of residents living in our Care Homes.

Best wishes, Dalrene
