"Husband was admitted with a suspected stroke."

About: East Surrey Hospital / Accident and emergency East Surrey Hospital / Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

(as a relative),

While being on the last day of our 10-day holiday from Germany to visit family in England and Wales my 59 year old husband suddenly displayed  stroke-like symptoms like paralysed arms, very weak legs and facial paralysis. The ambulance transferred my husband to the East Surrey emergency unit where he had a very thorough neurological assessment plus CCT scan  straight away.

Thankfully no stroke was diagnosed, but due to  his breathing deteriorating and testing Covid positive he was then transferred to the ICU department. All the staff we have dealt with are extremely capable, very caring and patient. Being a nurse myself I know a good nurse and hospital when I see them and I have nothing but praise about the efficiency, knowledge and kindness of the staff we have met. Especially the ICU department nurses are brilliant, since I am not allowed to directly visit my husband because of the Covid, they are going out of their way to make talking to him possible via mobile phone and visual contact through a window even though he can't hold the phone by himself. Even though it is difficult to leave my hubby I will have to go back to Germany on my own tomorrow.

The nurses made a talk to the doctor possible and have done everything in their power to reassure me that he is in good hands. I really do not think that he would have received the same level of care in a hospital back home.

So it is with a heavy heart but  with trust in the people who are looking after my husband so well that I said my very emotional "good-bye" today, with everybody in floods of tears (including nurse and patient).

I hope that the next time I see my husband he will feel a lot better and I am sure everybody will do their best to make that happen !

Thank you ever so much for all your dedication and care  so far 🤗
