"This injection literally changed my life overnight"

About: Braid Valley Hospital and Ballymena Health and Care Centre / Orthopaedic Assessment Service Musgrave Park Hospital / Children's Orthopaedics and biologics

(as a service user),

I am an employee in the health service  and was referred to the orthopaedic clinic in Ballymena following severe sciatica. The pain had become unbearable and I was really struggling in all aspects of daily life. This included my work and home life. I had become very upset as I felt I could no longer do my normal day to day activities and also found work almost impossible.

I had tried to stay at work as I needed the distraction but found myself in tears regularly and knew I could not carry on much longer with the pain.

I had an apt with Claire and she was so reassuring and really listened to my point of view. This in itself was so helpful as I had only had phone reviews with GP and physio and no one had actually saw me face to face until Claire did.

Claire discussed options with me and gave me excellent advice contrary to what I had been previously advised. After discussing treatments available she suggested getting a nerve root injection in Musgrave. I had the appointment for this approximately 8 weeks later.

This injection literally changed my life overnight. I am now back doing all my regular activities and work is absolutely no issue. I was treated so respectfully by Claire and am so grateful for her knowledge and expertise. She was welcoming, kind and considerate. I know only too well the pressure she is under from waiting lists but this did not come across at all during my consultation. Until we are in receipt of these services we do not know the true value of them.

I am so grateful that we have a service such as this within our Trust with such diligent employees.

Thank you so much Claire.

Hi GRA81, thank-you so much for taking the time to talk about your experience in Orthopaedic Assessment Service. I have only recently become a Care Opinion responder which explains my delayed response.

It is encouraging to hear that you had a positive experience not only during your assessment but also following your injection for sciatic pain which can be debilitating.

The service aims to give service users an understanding of their presentation and the best evidence-based treatment options. I am delighted you have been able to return to work and get back to and enjoy your usual activities.
