"Forth Valley Eye Clinic lack of care to childrens mental health"

About: Falkirk Community Hospital / Opthalmology

(as a parent/guardian),

We have been attending the eye clinic for 5 years now for our daughter, she has previously received an operation and has been under review since this was carried out in 2018. Over the last year we have had routine appointments to take measurements where we were advised that we were getting referred back to the consultant to see when she would want to do another operation - NOT IF.

I have spent months explaining to my daughter that this is just one of these things and trying to keep the whole thing as normal as possible to allow for her to not worry or be anxious about this. We have went through tears and sleepless nights to have her comfortable with the whole senario.

Yesterday, we attended the eye clinic at Falkirk Community Hospital and before even looking at her eyes the staff member had made multiple comments to my daughter about doing exercises (which at my previous appointments I was told wasn’t an option due to the operation taking place) and it’s just cosmetic anyway. She then proceeded to actually take the measurements.

We then went to speak with the consultant who opted to do the exercises and said an operation wasn’t required (which is great news as if my daughter doesn’t need an operation then who wouldn’t be happy). But she couldn’t explain to me why her team would have told me for the last year that an operation was required and now isn’t. She told me that they all work together as a team, yet we were told by her team that an operation was necessary. When I asked for an explanation she told my daughter , when you are young mum gets to make decisions for you, but when you are older you can make your own decisions, she then turned to me and said that I think we all need to take into consideration that I have other patients to see and accept this.

The long and the short of this is that we were told my daughter needed an operation, before we even sat down this person had decided she didn’t and then I was treated like a crazy person wanting an operation for my daughter that I was told she needed and now magically doesn’t.
