"3 visits to the EPU at the Hallamshire"

About: Royal Hallamshire Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

Just wanted to say thank you to the staff at the EPU at the Hallamshire for all their support over the last 2 years.

Early pregnancy is terrifying when things go wrong, and my husband and I felt so confused and vulnerable when we came in the process of losing our first pregnancy. Their sensitivity has meant a lot to us, and I appreciated the information we were given (verbally and in booklets, as well the invitation to support clinics), and the time we were given to absorb the information and make our decisions.

One of your staff members (sorry I can't remember her name) was meant to be on a training course the day we came back for the second tablet and wasn't in uniform. But I had miscarried naturally at home that night, and she stayed around to do the scan so that we wouldn't have to wait for someone else to become available. I appreciated that so much, along with the hug for both my husband and me. That personal contact and slight ignoring of policy meant the world to us.

We were equally supported through miscarriage number 2. Then late last year, it was an absolute delight to come back for an early referral to find out that all was fine with this pregnancy (I'm now 26 weeks along). It meant so much to see the same staff, who remembered supporting us previously, and who very quickly gave us the positive news during the scan rather than waiting while they took measurements.

These experiences will stay with us forever, and you helped turned something negative into an experience where we were touched by warmth and humanity. I don't know how you do the job you do, but I'm very pleased that you do. Thank you!

I wonder whether any of the Hallamshire team read the very moving and thoughtful article in Saturday's Guardian, reflecting on the experiences and feelings of staff as well as patients in the ultrasound room: www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2013/may/11/letter-to-lady-in-ultrasound-room.
