"My visit to the Gum Clinic"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Genito-Urinary Medicine

(as the patient),

I have a disability which  makes it impossible for me to carry out some sexual health checks on myself without help.

I knew that the GUM clinic were only seeing patients who had signs of an infection so I spoke to Leo at The Rainbow Project and he contacted the GUM clinic on my behalf to ask if they would see me even though I didn't have symptoms of an infection.

I have just had my second appointment with Brian who has been fantastic in helping me carry out tests to make sure that I had a clean bill of health.  He was patient, caring and extremely informative.  Most importantly, in a clinic where most people would probably seem a little sheepish, he made me feel welcome and comfortable.  The female reception with blonde hair who greeted me when I arrived at my initial appointment was also also very welcoming and offered a warm smile when I arrived.  This is definitely an improvement on the experience I had when I first used to attend clinics about 13 years ago. The staff are to be commended for their care to patients.
