"Arbroath MIIU"

About: Arbroath Infirmary / Minor Injuries

(as a service user),

I had a nasty problem with an area around the  skin graft on my head bleeding after 5 weeks.

I spoke to Plastic Surgery Day Care who advised me to contact my local health centre in Carnoustie, which I did. The plastic surgery unit also gave me their direct line (very helpful).

My local health centre couldn't give me an appointment and directed me to Arbroath and gave me a number to call. Uknown to me it was for the Care and Treatment Centre and I could have made an emergency appointment with them. I was under the impression I had to visit the Arbroath MIIU and so after a bit of to-ing and fro-ing I was told to attend that unit, and no appointment was needed (which I thought was odd).

I turned up to the MIIU and mass confusion reigned about why I was there - i.e. who told me go there and why? /I didn't have an appointment, etc.

However, the situation was taken in hand by the Staff Nurse Harris, who after a few phone calls (including plastic surgery) treated me both professionally and very kindly, including apologising for the confusion, when I had caused it - so I apoplogised  in turn.

Great service from this lady (and the Arbroath MIIU) and I managed to find her email and thank her again.

Dear conqq58

Thank you for taking the time to post your story on care opinion. Your feedback helps us to know what we did well and what needs improvement.

I'm so sorry to hear you've had problems with a skin graft to your head. This must have been a very worrying time for you, especially with bleeding after 5 weeks. The Minor Injury and Illness (MIIU) service in Angus would generally only see patents who have had a recent injury or have an illness that needs urgent review when their own GP practice is closed. With the redesign of urgent care, patients are now asked to call NHS 24 in the first instance for non life threatening issues, and are given an appointment if required. The care and treatment service is for patients who have been referred into their service, from another clinician, and require planned non -urgent care. I think that's why there has been some confusion. We will off course learn from your experience and it will help us with any further redesign of services.

I'm so pleased to hear that you received a great service from the staff in MIIU at Arbroath. Staff Nurse Harris is excellent, and I'm sure like me, she will be very pleased you felt you were treated professionally and with kindness. I will pass your comments onto her so thank you again for sharing your story with us.

I hope the wound to your head is healing well and gives no further cause for concern.

Take care

Anne
