I attended accident and emergency with a badly broken and dislocated ankle. A&E was surprisingly quiet for a Saturday night and I was attended to quickly by Doctor Bulet, who was very kind and compassionate and took his time to explain the break was bad (after x-ray) and my ankle needed put back into place. I was taken to resus and had my ankle reset under sedation very quickly and was given a bed on ward 22. Both the nurses in A&E and the porters commented that ward 22 was a lovely ward and given my experience there I couldn't agree more. I had a private room but was checked in on regularly and really well looked after, if I had to buzz for assistance with the toilet or pain medication it came quickly and I never felt like a burden. I had a misbehaving bed but it would always work after a bit of a fight from the nurses!
The next morning I saw the consultant early who advised I would require surgery for a trimalleolar fracture and requested a CT scan. I was advised that given it was a Sunday it would be unlikely to happen that day which I completely understood. An hour later I was collected by the porters for a CT scan and when I was outside waiting I could hear the doctor I'd seen earlier pleading my case for a CT (no names were mentioned, I just recognised my description) and the doctor was happy when he was told I was outside waiting!
Later that day the consultant visited and explained the procedure they would do which involved me being operated on while prone and the risks associated and then I was prepared for theatre. Miss Higgs explained my injury thoroughly and the recovery timeline I could expect and helped with my questions and concerns about an upcoming holiday I had planned. I've since heard that Miss Higgs is the best in the ankle business and I'm hugely grateful for all that she has done.
After surgery I had my pain well managed and was surprised and delighted when I was told I could go home the next day once I'd seen the physios and had my medication organised, I expected this would take most of the day but I saw the physiotherapists an hour later, both of whom were lovely and really patient and helpful and by the time I got back to my room, the lovely nurse (who may be called Becky) had my medication and discharge letters waiting. She told me about this site when I was saying how wonderful they had all been.
I've now had 2 clinic appointments which have gone really well, had my cast applied and then exchanged for a boot and everyone in the cast room was excellent, the doctors I've seen have been great and the last visit I met the physio Louise who instantly put me at ease and while I appreciate I still have a road to go I'm so grateful for the excellent care I have received.
"Excellent care in Paisley RAH"
