"Rehabilitation following Intracerebral Haemorrhage"

About: Cameron Hospital / Acquired brain injury (under 65)

(as a relative),

Suddenly, with no previous health issues, my husband suffered a bleed on the brain and was rushed to hospital.  The bleed was significant and we were told the first week would be touch and go.

He was transferred to the Sir George Sharp Unit, Cameron Hospital for Rehabilitation for under 65’s.

During his stay, his speech has progressed and he can take a few supported steps.

The Nursing & Support staff in the ward could not be nicer.  They have a great sense of humour, they don’t force medication that is safe to decline and they support the patients choices.

I spend long periods at the hospital and they are compassionate and caring to all patients, they treat the patients with respect and are a very close knit team.

Not all patients are understanding if they are tied up with another patient, however the staff always greet the patients with a smile, manners and professionalism.

The ward itself is standalone from the main hospital and without the staff they have, would be an incredibly difficult place to spend time.  The surroundings are amazing, however they deserve some funding to help modernise the unit to suit the needs and interests of the younger generation they are caring for and their families.  They do an amazing job with what they have, but the unit allows working age patients reintegrate into the community and in some cases return to employment, therefore it’s an integral part of the rehab process and needs acknowledged.

Whilst we will be here for some time still to come, we are happy that the staff understand his personality and engage with that, making his time here a little brighter.

We haven’t had much involvement with the Consultant, with only a brief visit, however he is not involved in day to day care like the nursing staff, care staff, physio’s, speech & language and OT.  Even the Housekeeping team get to know the patients quite well.

Thank you for taking the time to comment about your experience with us in the Sir George Sharp Unit. It is heart warming to hear that you and your husband are having a positive experience and that he is continuing to improve. We appreciate that a neurological condition impacts not just the individual but can drastically affect the whole family and I’m pleased that you too are feeling supported by team. We actively encourage family members to be involved in therapy sessions and to spend time with their loved one during this difficult time and I am pleased that you are seeing the benefit of this.

As a team, we believe in providing excellent patient centred care which is at the core of our practice. We aim to treat everyone as an individual, treating them with respect and dignity at all times, so thank you for acknowledging this.

We are always looking for ways to improve our patient and family’s experience. I would like to meet up with you, if possible, to hear more of your suggestions on how we can achieve this moving forward.

Thank you again for sharing your experience. I will pass on your compliments to the whole MDT who will be so pleased that their hard work and excellent teamwork has been recognised and also how their sense of humour, kindness and caring attitudes are helping to lighten up your husband’s days.

Best Wishes,

Donna
