"The staff put her at ease"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Ambulatory Care Unit

(as a relative),

Today my mum attended Altnegelvin DPU to have a cataract removed. From start to finish she received the highest standard of care by a lovely team. My mum has dementia and we had travelled up from fermanagh so my mum was anxious on arrival. The staff put her at ease treated here with the upmost respect and give her the highest standard of care possible. Thank you to all the staff involved we had a very positive experience and mum is recovering well.

Dear RoseJ22

My name is Nicola Hayes and I am temporarily Acting Head of Service for Older People's Mental Health. My substantive post is Dementia Service Improvement Lead for Acute Hospitals.

Thank you for sharing the positive experience that you and your mother had of your journey through the Day Procedure Unit in Altnagelvin.

I hope that your mother's cataract procedure was successful and I am glad to hear that she is recovering well.

Coming into the Day Procedure Unit can be a fearful and stressful time for any of us, never mind for someone living with dementia.

The care and treatment provided is essential to ensure that any hospital journey is person centred particularly in your mother's case where this procedure may have been difficult for her.

Approach and communication are vital in the caring profession, not only to ensure that your mother’s needs were met, but also that your needs were met.

Your feedback is very welcome to ensure safe, effective, compassionate and well led care is delivered.

Best Wishes

Nicola
