I attended maternity triage late one evening with pain and was initially assessed by an excellent student midwife on the labour ward who explained each step and put my mind at ease. The doctor who was on shift was equally attentive, and explained her clinical reasoning throughout. I fortunately got home that evening and returned the following day for a CTPA.
The following day I attended the ward I was advised to attend via telephone but they weren't expecting me nor had anywhere for me to be cannulated or change prior to my scan - as a result I missed my original CT appointment. I was instead sent down to maternity triage none the wiser about what was happening. The senior charge nurse in triage also wasn't expecting me, but she was fantastic and took control of the situation and luckily got my scan rebooked, cannulated me and got me prepped within a matter of minutes.
Thanks to her quick action I attended the scan and got the all clear within 90 minutes of being sent down to triage. Overall the care was excellent, but the lack of clear communication could have delayed the scan and impacted on my care.
"Effective care but communication lacking"
