"My Dad being diagnosed with stage4 lung cancer"

About: Fife Community Services / District Nursing Victoria Hospital / Lung Cancer Services

(as a relative),

My dad had been getting treated for COPD by gp for a few years, one month ago he was at the point of not being able to walk two steps without severe pain in his head and eyes, I planned to bring him into Victoria Hospital mid June 2022, to which took me 2 hours at home to convince my dad it was a good idea. We arrived at a&e and we’re seen quite quickly considering how busy it was, spent 2 days in admission, then up into respiratory ward, there was no let up on attention dad received, tests, scans, mri’s with contrast, the standard of care was great, then 6 days later came some bad news from Consultant that dad had stage 4 cancer of the lung, from that day to now Edward has been our point of call and this man is a diamond of a guy.

He’s very good at replying to messages promptly, answers thoroughly all our questions, is honest, thoughtful and gives you a sense of strength knowing your not alone that’s he’s right here to help make this hard journey not feel so hard, by making sure we get all the help needed quickly of which is all in place.

Because of this support dad is currently feeling strong, positive mindset and a sense of ease knowing his daughter can get answers quickly, that has been and continues to be great for my dads well being as he’s ex forces so that kind of detail to care has been first class. Since being home having the oxygen has made an enormous difference to my dad and he loves seeing the district nurses coming in 3 times a week, he loves their chat and giggles and they are so attentive and caring.

Dear AngeHG

Thank you for taking the time to leave such lovely feedback about the care your father received when he was in the admissions unit and the respiratory ward. I am sorry that this admission resulted in your dad receiving a lung cancer diagnosis.

Getting a cancer diagnosis can be a very distressing time for both patient and family. I know that it will mean so much to Edward that he is supporting you through this difficult time in the way that matters to each of you. I am extremely proud of the high standard of physical and emotional care that our cancer nurse specialists provide to their patients every day. Edward is a great advocate for his patients and always delivers person centred care that responds to the patient's individual needs.

Edward is currently on annual leave but I know he will be thrilled to read this care opinion

I am pleased to hear that your dad is currently feeling strong and wish him well in the future.

Best wishes

Murdina
