"An awful experience during a stressful time"

About: York Hospital / Breast surgery

(as a service user),

Having attended this Centre before, I was so upset to witness staff going through the motions with a level of detachment that has no place in such a Centre.

The nursing staff directing between the waiting areas were lovely, warm and friendly.

The female Dr who conducted the physical exam was cold, detached, unwelcoming, it seemed just simply going through the motions.  This detachment left me ill at ease. Their words left me feeling like I was wasting their time.  Direction on how to sit or lay was not clear and the doctor became frustrated when I positioned myself incorrectly on the bed.

I have bipolar and stressful situations can leave me confused. The impatience was very clear.

I was moved next to the mammogram room. My sister who is my carer and support remained in the waiting area. 6 years ago this test was uncomfortable - today the pain was excruciating. Again the staff member was cool, detached, and going through the motions moving my body parts here and there. I felt so embarrassed, so ashamed and very upset. The experience was awful.

Next was the ultra sound. They wouldn't allow my sister to move to the waiting room id been placed in. This made me very anxious, and there was sufficient seating to accommodate her.

They only found 1 lump with my assistance, the other 2 they failed to locate, one I think is likely because they simply scanned the top of my breast and not the left side inwards or from underneath. Bearing in mind that I have a family member who was misdiagnosed with breast cancer and then died, which they were aware of, I feel this scan was poorly conducted.

I don't feel any confidence in the outcome. I felt like I was a lump of flesh being examined by these 3 staff members. I'Il never go back to this Centre after todays experience. I was so upset I cried on the way home.

These staff members may handle breasts all day long, but they have to remember that we don't get them out all day long for strangers. The Centre was never like this before. It was an awful experience during a stressful time.
