My son was admitted to ERI for scheduled surgery in early July. As he has a learning disability, we (his parents) were enabled to stay with him all the time, including overnight. Throughout his short stay his care was outstanding and all staff we had contact with were helpful and obliging as well as very professional. It was a very busy ward and many staff - they were all great. He stayed in for two days and was very well cared for.
In terms of what could be better I would highlight two points: we had a stream of people introducing themselves and asking questions (completely understand why) but it was difficult to know who they all were and what their role was in my son's care; from the time we were told he was well enough to leave, and to actually drive away would take seven hours. We've had hospital stays before so know it is not straightforward, but it seems that no-one actually owns the process and as it is not urgent, it's not a priority. For someone with a learning disability, this is hard to take and stay calm. And it means a room is occupied when it could be cleaned and made available.
