"Urgent spinal surgery"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Neurosurgery (Ward 64 – 66)

(as the patient),

I was admitted urgently for emergency spinal surgery. All the neurosurgical doctors and nursing staff were fantastic during my 17 day stay, In particular Mr Alakandy and his team.

The registrar was very professional and took a lot of time to explain what was going to happen and also included my partner in everything too. He is a credit to the NHS and the care and compassion received from him throughout my stay was fantastic.

All the nursing staff in ward 65, including porters and kitchen staff were fantastic and spent a lot of time helping me post operative. Despite being under pressure they always had time for me.

I did however have issues with the junior doctors in the ward. I understand the NHS is under a lot of pressure but this should not affect patient care,

During my first 15 days of staying I did not feel "right" and was experiencing confusion and hallucinations. I raised my concerns several times and my symptoms were put down to a urine infection then mental health issues.

I eventually discovered the problem that in fact it was due to a medication issue and I was on the maximum dose rather than starting at a lower dose and gradually building up. I am disappointed that the junior doctors did not investigate my symptoms fully and appeared to blame it  on my mental health,  and the fact it took me to discover what was causing my symptoms. If I hadn't had medical knowledge I am unsure whether they would have got to the bottom of the issue.

As I state everyone else was fantastic and the issue was with junior doctors on the ward and not the neurosurgical team
