"My experience of health and care services"

About: The Longley Centre / Maple Ward

(as a service user),

My experience of health and care services -

What they are doing right...

1) Most staff are very nice, friendly and kind.

2) is a safe environment.

3) Impressed with community meeting being help- ward is interested in hearing our opinions/voices.

How they can improve...

1) More opportunities to go outside in the garden.

2) Moving more rowdy hard to manage patients to somewhere else.

3) MORE funding!!! the services/trust desperately need more money.

4) MORE staff - staff are overworked (and under paid)

5) better WIFI - in many rooms the WIFI doesn't work.

6) better food - food isn't that flavoursome.

7) more food, more meal times, bigger portions, more tastier options.

Hi,

Thank you for your comments, it is reassuring to hear that you feel that the ward is safe and that you found the staff friendly and kind. It is important for everyone being cared for within Maple Ward has their voice heard and it's appreciative that you found the Community Meetings beneficial.

With regards to the improvements you suggest:

1. The garden must be accessible for those who wish to use it, it is unfortunate that any access to the garden must be supervised due to risks within its environment. Work is planned to take place towards the end of this year which will remove the risks currently present and will mean that the garden will be accessible without the need for staff support.

2. Maple is an acute admissions ward with individuals within different points of their recovery. I appreciate that loud and rowdy patients may be distressing to those witnessing their behaviour, especially those working towards their discharge from hospital. I will speak to the team so to look at how best we can manage such patients so to improve the environment for all.

3. There is little that I am able to do about funding for the ward, however if you have any suggestions as to what the funding is required for then I would be happy to look into this.

4. The NHS is currently experiencing a staffing crisis which we are trying to manage the best that we can. We are running with vacancies however we anticipate that these will be filled in the upcoming months.

5. We are aware of the Wi-Fi issue and are looking to get this resolved.

6 & 7. The ward has to meet a diet plan that meets individual nutritional needs. There are always alternatives to the meals that are provided which need to be requested to the Housekeeping team. Due to the risk of potential weight gain, especially with some of the medications that we prescribe, we portion our meals specifically. I will however pass your comments to the Head Housekeeper.

I appreciate the comments you have made and thank you for bringing them to my attention.

Many thanks,

Mark Walton

Hi,

There has been an update on some of the concerns you have raised.

At the beginning of next year we are having a full overhaul of the Wi-Fi service on Maple Ward. We have had the Wi-Fi range mapped on the ward and it was evident that the service was very patchy, which has an impact for everyone on the ward.

The ward is having a complete refurbishment towards the end of next year. The issues regarding the garden will be met as part of these refurbishments.

We continue to strive to provide the best that we can for the patients we care for, and hope that these changes will provide a much improved environment which is conducive towards recovery.

Many thanks,

Mark Walton,

Ward Manager, Maple Ward
