"Husband's urology care"

About: Highland Community Services / Nursing and Child Health Raigmore Hospital / Urology

(as a relative),

My husband has nephrostomy's in both kidneys.  Unfortunately, 2 days ago the one in the right hand kidney came out, leaving him with an opening directly in to the kidney which causes the urine to pour out onto his skin, clothes etc.  We contacted the District Nurses who visited and padded him as best they could at the time.

Unfortunately as it was out of hours they were unable to arrange a time for him to go in and have the nephrostomy replaced. The district nurse came out in the afternoon and used padding and microporous tape to keep the area covered and soak up the urine. This stayed on for a while until it soaked through and he had to change his full clothing and the padding three times before bed.

During the night he needed extra protection so he had extra padding, held on with tape and then a thick towel wrapped around him to give extra absorbency. He needed to get a full change of clothes and padding a further twice during the night giving only a couple of hours rest in between. He has had to limit the amount of liquid he is taking in so that he can stay dry for as long as possible.

From 9am - 14:30 he has had to change clothes 4 times and is continually washing clothes and towels. The nurses came out twice today, they changed his padding and did try to use a stoma bag but this didn't work due to the amount of urine the stoma bag wouldn't stay in place to work.

The nurses came back this afternoon and have told him that he would be seen on Friday! although not yet confirmed. If he feels unwell during this time he will need to go to Aberdeen hospital for treatment! Aberdeen is 150 miles away and is a ridiculous suggestion. We are very concerned as we know the Nephrostomy's will heal between now and Friday!

This is absolutely ridiculous and is leaving my husband with no quality of life. He is spending so much of his day soaking wet in urine having to change multiple times. its beyond a joke. We really need him to be seen before Friday and have this issue resolved.
