"No reasonable adjustments given, but surgery first class"

About: Freeman Hospital / General surgery

(as a service user),

Had hernia surgery at the Freeman last year. The consultant surgeon seemed indifferent and didn't want to engage too much, but did an amazing clinical job on my hernia.

The staff in the day case ward and in the theatres were absolutely amazing and I couldn't have had better care.

Sadly, I didn't get any reasonable adjustments on account of being autistic at any point during my initial consultation despite being asked, but the hospital did arrange a phone call for me to speak with the anaesthetist prior to the operation which was a nice touch.

All in all an experience that most hospitals can't match apart from the ignorance of the needs of autistic people who at times seem to be excluded from the NHS drive for equality, diversity and inclusion.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback regarding your experience of using the surgical services at the Freeman last year. It is great to hear that you had first class surgery and that staff on the day ward and theatres were amazing. However it is disappointing to hear that there were no reasonable adjustments made on account of your autism.
