"Gastro and general surgery consultation"

About: Crosshouse Hospital Heathfield Suite / General Surgery (excl Vascular, Maxillofacial)

(as the patient),

Feeling failed due to my recent gastro & general surgery consultations . I have been having symptoms of gallbladder problems which all started when I was 14 weeks pregnant which was 9 months ago now, 9 months I have lived with daily debilitating pain.  I raised concerns at the start and I got told this was reflux and indigestion (I feel you know your own body) I then had an ultrasound scan which showed no gallstones which I believe can sometimes be hard to detect.

Fast forward 7 months later my baby is here and having worse pains and 3 1/2 stone weight loss as I cannot eat without pain! Urgently referred to see the gastro consultant, in my opinion was a waste of time, dismissed my pain and told me it was stress pains and would not be sending me for further scans.  However they would send me for an endoscopy instead. I know my own body and I knew nothing would show up with an endoscopy either, but felt like I had to go through with it to prove a point and to rule it out.  Its not nice having to go through things that you feel is not needed! I can say that all the endoscopy nurses were nice and made me feel as if I was sane as a few agreed that it sounded like gallbladder.

I’m in my twenties with chronic pain and a baby to look after which is hard when your in daily pain and have no energy due to weight loss.  This should be the happiest time of my life.   I have no social life as I am practically house bound due to fear of the pain starting when out. I’m now left to go back private and be out of pocket on maternity allowance giving me no other option but to take a loan out all because the consultants think my pain is stress related or IBS. I know my body and I feel disheartened and failed. I feel like no one is sitting down and listening to me! I have never been so disappointed.

Thank you for sharing your feedback and I was so sorry to hear of the upset caused following your recent hospital visits. I do not underestimate the impact that your ongoing pain is having on your health and wellbeing, which must be especially difficult with a new baby to care for.

We would welcome the opportunity to investigate your concerns in more detail and if that would be helpful, please feel free to either email me, linda.russell7@aapct.scot.nhs.uk, or call me on 01563 26210.

With best wishes,

Linda
