"I had my right hip replacement 7 weeks ago after waiting for 4 years."

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Radiology Trauma & Orthopaedics / Ward 25

(as the patient),

I am 80 years old and was nervous about having this surgery. Thanks to the nurses in the pre operation assessment clinic, OT and physio as they made me feel so welcome and helped set my fears and worries. They were kind, friendly and professional.

Then when I was admitted the staff in ward 25 were also kind, helpful and professional.

I did have a bad experience when I went to the X-ray department post surgery and there was four staff who had to transfer me from the bed to the table and back. I felt like I was treated like a piece of meat and hurt my new hip during the transfer. This experience did upset me greatly but I did settle on return to the ward.

Hi dancese77

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments on Care Opinion

I am pleased to hear that after a 4 year wait you have had your hip replacement surgery performed.

I was disappointed to hear of your bad experience whilst in our Radiology Department. Following hip replacement surgery all patients will have a check X-Ray on the first day post-op. This imaging ensures that the new hip replacement is located in the correct position before the patient is mobilized. To carry this out requires a lateral transfer for the patient from the patient’s bed to the X-Ray table and back again.

It can be a painful experience but our staff try their best using slide sheets and transfer boards to make this as quick and painless as possible. I have shared your experience with the staff who were involved with the transfer on the day, and will also share at team meetings to facilitate learning from your experience.

I do apologize for the pain and distress experienced during this time and wish you a quick and speedy recovery

Joanne McFeely
