"Advice given to elderly mother"

About: Waterside Hospital / Ward 3

(as a relative),

I am very unhappy with the way my elderly mother was treated by one of your social workers. Mum was in ward 3 of Waterside hospital , Derry after being transferred there from Altnagelvin hospital. She was doing well with her physio etc and my sister was working hard to get a suitable care package in place for mums release. My mum has been diagnosed with vascular dementia and Alzheimer's so a care package was vital for her to be deemed ready for coming home.

One of the social workers was constantly telling my mum she could check herself out any time! My mum is barely mobile and has had a serious mental health diagnosis and the social worker is encouraging her to check herself out and go home!

All the other staff on ward 3 were fantastic, it's a shame this one person is ruining their reputation as caregivers.

encourage people to share their experiences of health and social care, what matters to you, what you particularly liked or disliked so that we can share with the relevant department, and staff .

Hello conditionersd73

Thank you for the feedback. This was shared with the Ward Manager and also Social Work Manager who oversees the Social Workers in Ward 3. She was disappointed to hear of you and your Mum's experience and would like the opportunity to discuss this in more detail with you in order to address the issues with the member of staff.

You can contact her either via email or phone whatever is more convenient for you

Muire.Coyle@westerntrust.hscni.net or 02871345171 and ask for Extension 216366.

I do hope you take up this opportunity to make contact

Best wishes

Vi Gray
