I've had numerous gastroscopy procedures in the past due to having had an Ivor Lewis procedure. I was always sedated properly and not aware of the camera going down my throat which was obviously a reasonably bearable experience. Unfortunately, during this procedure I was informed that the sedation I would be given would not put me to sleep and, as a result, I found the whole experience torturous and very unpleasant. This experience was so bad that I am very apprehensive about ever getting another one.
Why does the hospital now not use proper sedation as they did in the past?
Is it a case of getting more people through the system quicker or cost cutting?
I hope I never have to experience this way of sedation in the future which happened to be 2mg Midazolam combined with some throat spray both of which were totally ineffective.
The only good thing I can say about the procedure is that everyone was very kind and caring.
