"Gastroscopy Procedure with no adequate sedation"

About: Victoria Hospital / Endoscopy

(as the patient),

I've had numerous gastroscopy procedures in the past due to having had an Ivor Lewis procedure.  I was always sedated properly and not aware of the camera going down my throat which was obviously a reasonably bearable experience.  Unfortunately, during this procedure I was informed that the sedation I would be given would not put me to sleep and, as a result, I found the whole experience torturous and very unpleasant.  This experience was so bad that I am very apprehensive about ever getting another one.

Why does the hospital now not use proper sedation as they did in the past?

Is it a case of getting more people through the system quicker or cost cutting?

I hope I never have to experience this way of sedation in the future which happened to be 2mg Midazolam combined with some throat spray both of which were totally ineffective.

The only good thing I can say about the procedure is that everyone was very kind and caring.

Dear Biggles1

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments Care Opinion. We welcome and value all feedback. I am pleased to hear that you found the team to be kind and caring however, I am sorry to hear that you found the endoscopy procedure itself not so positive. I can understand why you would feel apprehensive about having a further procedures in the future. If you are in agreement I would like the opportunity to discuss this further with you. Could you kindly email me your name, date of birth and contact details. This will allow me to review your notes, to try and understand how this happened and to obtain some learning from this. Again thank you for sharing your experience, kind regards, Siobhan McIlroy, Clinical Nurse Manger email: siobhan.mcilroy@nhs.scot Tel 01592 643355 Ext 20937
