"Regaining my independence"

About: Neurological Rehabilitation Centre / Inpatient Unit

(as the patient),

When I first arrived here, I couldn't even get out of bed; I had to rely on the nurses to help me with the Sara Steady - with that, I was able to lift myself up a little and get out of bed. Eventually, I was able to push myself up to sit out of bed but my legs were still very uncoordinated.

The therapists provided me with wheelchair to use to get around the place so I could be more independent. Realising I was able to go places e.g. the toilet by myself, I learnt how to do these daily things such as going to the toilet without needing any help. I picked up some things by myself such as locking the door behind me. After all, this is rehabilitation centre and the aim is for you to help yourself as much as possible and not for people to be helping you.

Everyone is different but whatever you are able to do by yourself I would suggest doing it! When I first came here, I thought I would be wheelchair bound but by the end of my journey, I am able to walk safely with a frame and also able to carry out a lot of my daily tasks independently. Little by little, you notice changes that start to improve for example, my speech has become a lot clearer with thanks to myself and the help of Colin. Thank you to all the staff here!

Dear Killokk69

Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback on your experience of rehabilitation at the NRC. I am pleased to read of your improvements, not least because of your own will to improve your independence.

If there is anything we can do to improve the experience at the NRC, please do let us know as we are always looking to get better.

Thank you
