"My ultrasound experience"

About: Queen Marys Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I went along today for an ultrasound. This appointment was Text to me. I imagined that it would involve only a scan of my pelvis. I was told on entering that it would involve a internal ultrasound.

The clinician then asked me if I was a virgin, I was so taken aback, that they then repeated the question. I was then asked to remove my clothing from the lower part of my body, I wasn’t provided with a screen for privacy. The clinician sat with their back to me - randomly asking a few questions, whilst speaking into a dictaphone.

I then placed myself on the chair for the procedure, the clinician then asked me am I wet or dry. They then performed the procedure, which went ok.

I was then told to put my clothing on - again no screen and the clinician didn’t even allow me some privacy to dress, they cleaned the machine whilst I dressed.

I was stunned at the use of such poor clinical language, with no sensitivity at all. The whole experience left me feeling vulnerable, exposed and really quite saddened.

I work for the NHS and fully understand the pressure staff are under.

This was an invasive procedure. I won’t return to this clinic in the future.
