"Poor Quality of Catering"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

I have been in the RVH Hospital for 3 days last week and again this week. The standard of catering is incredibly poor quality but more so cold constantly. The nursing staff dishing out this seem embarrassed to even bring it in!

I have a Gluten Free Diet never one was I offered anything that could be classed as safe to eat for lunch or dinner, I had to try and eat Mashed Potatoes and Veg which are frozen and bland, I could I survived if it was even eatable but was stone cold all the time and left a chemical aftertaste?? How can food cooked/reheated on site brought to the ward in headed trolleys be so cold?

Fruit salad was more tinned fruit than fresh, seriously we are here as we are ill how can they Mangement allow this to happen?

Dear NeillUK,

At the outset may I offer my apologies for your experience with the Catering Service provided to you as an inpatient in the Royal Victoria Hospital. The Trust Dieticians approve patient menus and all items are dietary coded to ensure that patients receive meals suitable to their requirements. All Patient menus do offer a Gluten free option for both lunch and dinner with a varied choice daily I am surprised that the choice for this diet was an issue, I will speak to my nursing colleagues regarding the menus and the distribution of the menu on the wards. We have carried out an audit on the food service temperatures leaving the pantry and whilst on the ward before it is served and will continue to monitor the food temperature to all wards. We are also reviewing the ingredients in the fruit salad which is made fresh each day with the addition of some other fruits to improve the nutritional value to the patient I thank you for bringing this to our attention. All complaints are taken seriously and used positively to improve the services that we provide to our patients and users. Once again I apologise for your negative experience and would like to thank you for raising your concerns. The Belfast Trust has a Catering Food and Nutrition Group that meet regularly and we will be bringing to the groups attention the issues raised in your complaint.

Best wishes

Maurice
