"No x-ray reception, patients confused"

About: South Tyrone Hospital / Radiology

(as a service user),

My dad had an appointment for an x-ray at Dungannon that his GP had arranged. I dropped him off at the x-ray entrance and went to look for a car space as the disabled bays were all taken.

I went in and found a gathering of patients all congregated in the corridor and the seating area with only a handful of chairs also full. My father was a bit distressed as were the other members of the public as he didn't know what he was supposed to do.

There was a sign to say reception closed however nobody seemed to know what the process was to get registered. There was also an injured patient with a bandage and blood dripping from it onto the floor and chair. This I felt was not good from an infection control point of view.

Eventually a reception girl came, however there was a mad rush from others to get to the front of the queue. If elderly like my dad, he was not able to get to his place in the queue. I advised the girl behind the counter that there was confusion however the response I got was quite blunt and I cannot recall what was said.

My father did get his x-ray not long after his appointment time. I waited in the cubicle and the person taking the x-ray told us it would be a few weeks for results.

I mentioned how confusing it was on arrival for all the people that were waiting with no reception open and not knowing where to go or who to speak to. The staff member told me that they were just a bank person and didn't know either. They did advise me to provide feedback on this platform.

I hope my comments are taken on board as it was not the best experience, especially for my dad who is elderly.

Good morning India567 - thank you for using the Care Opinion platform to tell us about your recent experience with your father and apologies for the delay in replying to you. I am very sorry that your experience with your father was not a positive one and we can appreciate the difficulties you both had.

The waiting room in the xray department has currently only 4 chairs due to COVID restrictions. We have looked at the area and are consulting with our colleagues in the Estates Department to see if we can increase the size of the waiting area.

Unfortunately, on occasions, the receptionist has to leave the reception area to follow up on a query, we understand that this can cause difficulties for patients and carers. We intend to change the notice at reception to receptionist will return shortly, which will hopefully help.

I was sorry to read of the difficulties you and your father experienced and can assure you that we will certainly take your comments on board.

Thank you again for highlighting these issues

Ann Tate

Good morning India567

I just wanted to get back in touch to update you. We now have a notice on the window if the receptionist has to leave reception. This informs everyone to please wait in the waiting area and that the receptionist will be back shortly.

Thank you again,

Ann Tate
