"This mental health service is unprofessional -NHS at it's very worst"

About: Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust

(as a relative),

This Trust is so poor in all it does. My sister has schizophrenia. She is supposedly under a community team in Camden and has been for years. They fail to make appointments . They refuse to send letters but she doesn't have a phone and quite rightly doesn't answer the door to unexpected callers as it is unsafe to do so and then they complain they cant get to see her. During covid they left her for 5 months without any contact and she was found in a terrible state by emergency council plumbers. No food, no heat, no money in the meter as her benefits had been cut off. I was told they were 'looking out for her' when I called because we couldn't visit. She was neglected and really unwell.

The GP tries very hard but says they don't tell him when she is admitted or discharged form wards where she ends up because no one has cared. No point ever ringing that crisis line as no one there seems to know what they are doing they don't take messages for the team she is meant to be under they refused to ask the council to check on her and said they could send police . Which would just terrify her like it does everyone they do that to. All we wanted to make sure she was ok then and since then after she has been home she hasn't been for her monthly injection. I know confidentiality is very important but it is used to try shut up carers and family way too many times for her team are very quick to ring us if she needs admission and there are no beds and they want us to stop everything and look after her. Which if her community team were doing their jobs  in the first place she wouldn't need. Why does no one check up on this Trust?

She wont go and get help so is easy to just ignore it seems and the crisis line are always so obstructive they never think of safeguarding responsibility I think their only role is to gatekeep the hospital beds . Not joined up is understatement of the decade they cant even manage very basic communication like writing your patient a letter with an appointment. Apparently too hard to do so they can then say she didnt open the door to the complete stranger from the community team

We are very sorry to hear about your negative experience of our Trust and in particular the care and treatment received by your sister from our community services. Specifically you mention that we didn’t send letters, communicate effectively and that your sister was neglected by services for 5 months. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and we welcome all feedback to help us improve the care that we provide. During the COVID pandemic we made sure that we regularly contacted all service users through phone calls and where necessary and safe to do so, via face to face visits. We are very sorry that you feel that we didn’t do this for your sister. We would really appreciate you getting in touch with us via our Feedback Team (feedback@candi.nhs.uk) so that we can arrange for a manager to contact you to discuss your specific concerns.

We are also sorry that you feel our crisis line is unresponsive, at times obstructive and often does not effectively communicate with service users and carers. Working with family members and carers is important to us and we always try to involve them in a person’s care. Again, please do get in touch with our Feedback Team so we can address your specific concerns. You also mention the lack of available beds if someone requires admission. We will always find a bed if an inpatient admission is required and will strive to find a bed locally, although on occasion we may need to place someone out of area.
