"My visit to children’s A&E"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Accident & Emergency

(as a service user),

On my way in to children’s A&E at queen Elisabeth hospital in Glasgow. The staff member at the door was so rude when asking why I had brought my child down today.

When explaining that my doctor had called the hospital and on their advice said I should bring him down, I was stopped mid sentence and told that doctors don't call ahead.

I don’t usually get too upset by people being off and rude but this felt like an attack almost as if I was making it up. Bringing my child to A&E is not something I would think lightly of. I am fully aware many people use A&E incorrectly. Also I was pretty worried about my child and feeling vulnerable. I shouldn’t have to defend my actions to an angry staff member. This was not good practice. It left me feeling like I should not be there.

Hi FioW22,

I am sorry to hear your child is unwell and needed to come to our Emergency Department, I hope they are feeling better soon.

I am the Lead Nurse for the Emergency Department. I am sorry to read about your experience and thank you for bringing it to my attention. Our staff on the door are placed there to ensure that our patients are seen by the right people and follow the appropriate pathway. This is not meant to be rude or accusatory and I have discussed this with the Designated Senior Charge Nurse and asked that the door staff reflect on your experience.

I am happy to take more information from you to ensure that I can feedback to the team and avoid someone else having this experience. If you are happy to, please could you email me with further information? My email address is lewis.doult@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

I am truly sorry you were made to feel this way and thank you for making us aware of your experience today.
