"Not so Forward Thinking"

About: Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter has received appalling service from Mental Health Services including Forward Thinking.  She was referred to Forward Thinking in December 2021.  Was put on waiting list for nearly 9/10 weeks.  After which Forward Thinking completely ignored how ill she was and how urgently she needed help.  They referred her onto Living Well Consortium who put her on a waiting list again for 8/9 weeks.

Eventually when spoke to someone from LWC who asked about her condition to decide her treatment.  Told the staff member she has severe body dysmorphia, depression, anxiety, self harm, suicidal thoughts. She has not left house for nearly a year.  He was shocked that Forward Thinking referred her to them knowing how severe her mental illness is.

The staff member said will speak to supervisor to refer her back to Forward Thinking but supervisor disagreed.  They then told me she needs intense CBT therapy will refer her face to face but will take another few weeks 6 or more, but then referred her to another organisation !

Birmingham Counselling Services.  They ignored the referral until I rang and were shocked no one had rang me back for an appointment for my daughter.  I then realised that my daughter had been referred to this organisation for Counselling!

Living Well Consortium were aware her situation is beyond counselling.  She needs medication or intense CBT but they refer her for counselling.  My daughter very upset and angry, we both know counselling is not for her, she needs more than that.

It is now May 2022 still nothing for my daughter.  In my opinion Forward Thinking were wrong to forward the referral to another organisation.  Forward Thinking should have dealt with and provided treatment for my daughter. But the impression I got from Forward Thinking is unless she tries to seriously harm herself she's not our problem. Someone else can deal with her.

LWC acknowledged Forward Thinking wrong to refer her on but couldn't do anything.  They refer her onto another organisation which is totally useless for her.  My daughter is getting worse but no one cares.   Forward Thinking is mental health service for young people.  But they only want to help certain people, rest not there problem no matter how ill they are. Unless you have tried to seriously harm yourself, Forward Thinking will not help you.

You are someone else's problem. Not there's.  From our experience the Mental Health Services are a total disgrace.  If my daughter is not ill enough for them to help then who do they help.

Who does Forward Thinking Birmingham help???  Why did they refuse to help my daughter???

We are concerned to read about your experiences seeking help for your daughter. Whilst we do work with a range of services in the Living Well Consortium it will be important that you and your daughter understand and are happy with the care pathway. If you can give us more details on this secure online form https://bwc.nhs.uk/contact-pals-form then we will swiftly be able to ask a senior manager at Forward Thinking Birmingham to investigate your case and report back to you directly.

With best regards, The PALS Team at BWC NHS Foundation Trust.
