"Concerns about new smear test policy"

About: NHS Fife

(as a service user),

I understand that as of 2020 smear tests no longer look for cell changes, they only check for HPV (human papilloma virus) and if that’s negative your classed as low risk of developing cervical cancer and don’t need another smear for 5 years.

I have had colposcopy 3 times (sin4) and I have never had HPV or any symptoms. On questioning the GP I was told all woman are basically bundled together with this policy and unless you have symptoms they won’t do anything!

My cell were checked at last smear 3 years ago, so in theory by my next smear in 5 years if I still have no symptoms but do have cell changes it will have been 8 years without diagnosis and we all know how dangerous that length of time is. I think it’s utterly disgusting to block all women together like this especially when they have a history of cell changes with no HPV or symptoms.

I now feel I have to go private for a smear test just so I can get them to look for cell changes, how is this policy right? Surely preventing cervical cancer is better than treating it.
