"North of Scotland Young persons unit"

About: Dudhope Young People's Unit / Adolescent Psychiatry

(as a parent/guardian),

Whilst the staff are lovely and highly skilled and also spent plenty of time with us all, there is no input, say or adjustment in treatment or next steps to fit in the young person and family.

Care was to a high standard but assumptions were made on our situation rather than validated at times on my young persons health and what is best for them. The process is such that there is no appeal, no right of reply and no change in decision.

As a family we feel the wrong assumptions then conclusions have been made at times despite trying on multiple occasions to explain why and where we were coming from, there was nothing we could do which is wrong. This should be more about working together to get to the right outcome and for us it did not feel like this. More pressure has been put on everyone including the young person and this did not need to happen.

It’s not the situation we wanted our young person to come home to but you have knowingly pushed us into a corner with something none of us are ready for with an undertone of ‘social work’ if we didn’t agree. Whilst this was clearly not the intention, it demonstrates the lack of flexibility when something is grey.

I am giving this feedback as a family who see the need for this part of the relationship to change, not because we didn’t get the outcome we believe to be right but because of the additional pain and stress we have all been under as a result. We would like flexibility based on the situation and individual, where they are willing to change approach to meet the needs of the person being cared for, where a solution is not pushed onto us that doesn't fit and short term hospital care is available.

Dear Sunny99,

Thank you for providing this feedback which I will share with the team here at Dudhope Young People's Unit. As a team we work very hard to involve our young people and their families in decision-making around their care and treatment. I'm very sorry to hear that this wasn't your experience.

In order to provide you with a more comprehensive response, I'd like to invite you to get in touch in order that we can discuss your experience in more detail. You can contact me via YPU Reception on 01382 649031 or via email: tay.taynospgcamhs@nhs.scot

I hope to hear from you soon.

Update posted by Sunny99 (a parent/guardian)

Dear Rosie,

I haven’t got in contact with you so unsure who you are responding to. It’s not to us about our young person and we haven’t been back in contact with the unit for a number of reasons.

Sunny
