I felt disrespected and was distressed by the radiographer who performed my mammogram.
I have cysts on my breasts (have had for more that 25 years) they are regularly aspirated so I have lots of experience of having mammograms.
I felt they seemed to be going through the motions, not listening to me at best, or disregarding my plea for gentleness as my breasts were very painful.
My right breast was nipped accidently because I felt they were not being careful enough. This was a very sore screen. I informed the radiographer that my left breast had a large painful lump at the lower left side and asked them to be really careful. I was near to tears at this point. They seemed to hear me but when they were dialling down the machine it crushed my breast very painfully therefore they had to release it.
The scan was eventually taken. I was then told I had moved and that it was an unclear picture and they would be reporting this to the Doctor - I asked to see it - they said I was not allowed behind the desk. We agreed to do it once more with more care. It was done and I was told this time it was successful.
I do not understand why the process could not have been done without this terrible pain and distress and provided with gentleness.
I told the radiologist they had given me a very unpleasant experience. I explained that I was experienced in having these done regularly.
I feel this is not an acceptable service. They need to think about patient care, and the possible trauma of having this procedure and they need to make sure they know how to use the machine correctly, they seemed to turn the nob after I hold them to stop and when they walked off it clicked down another notch. It felt excruciating on my painful breasts.
