"The whole process was fantastic"

About: Maternity care / Maternity Admission/Assessment Unit

(as the patient),

I had an elective c-section. The whole process was fantastic from being checked in at maternity assessment to the discharge.

The whole team were super - midwives in theatre and ward, obstetrician, nurses in theatre, scrub nurse, theatre nurses, health care assistants and anaesthetists. Everything was explained.

Midwives in the ward were as attentive as they could be considering staffing and discharging planning. Midwives tried to listen to each mother and baby needs where possible.

As a first time mum, having a baby is the unknown. No question I had was silly.

Update posted by BMH22 (the patient)

Thank you for taking the time to read and reply to my comment.

Words can’t express the gratitude I have for all the staff from start to finish. Sadly, I didn’t get all the staff members names. Here is a few I did get.

Amy cared for me in the assessment and theatre. Amy was very knowledgeable and reduced my fears of having a section. Aswell as reducing my husbands anxiety over the whole process. Amy kept my husband and myself reassured when our baby needed some assistance when she came into the world. Amy was also able to help my husband feed baby while I was being sutured and struggling to breast feed.

Jenny and Margaret were 2 midwives of many that cared for me and baby on the ward, they took the time to get to know me and my husband, Margaret especially. Margaret was a bucketful of knowledge and took the time to chat when she wasn’t attending to the other mothers. Chat does the mental health some good especially with covid restrictions still in place which prevents relatives other than partners from coming in.

There was 2 midwifery students who will be fantastic as midwives when they qualify, their names were Rebecca and Natasha. No question was silly and they took the time to show and explain things.

I know time is an issue in the NHS as workload increases with more paperwork and short staff but no staff member made this known and always tried to help all the mothers and babies. All staff went above and beyond for all.

Thank you for your response.

I will ensure your story is shared with all staff that you have named via their ward managers. Our team can use such lovely feedback for their revalidation taking into account their professional code of conduct.

As a unit we strive to deliver excellence in all that we do and it is through such feedback that we can improve and develop our services and ensure women are the centre in all that we do and it is reassuring to read that you felt centre to all of your care

Warmest regards

Mary Dawson
