"Altnagelvin Hospital Labour Ward"

About: Maternity care / Ward 45 ( antenatal) Maternity care / Ward 48 (labour ward)

(as a service user),

I was admitted to antenatal ward in April 2022, I was warmly welcomed by midwife, Maria, who cared for me for a few hours. Maria was amazing, she explained the induction process that I was admitted for and ensured I was comfortable at all times. I also was cared for by a midwife who's second name was McFaul on the night shift. Again, she was amazing, comforting and reassuring and taking into consideration my wish to transfer to labour ward for an epidural in a timely manner and ensuring this happened.

When I went to the labour ward I met Sr. Joan. I immediately felt safe in the hands of Joan and knew she was very knowledgeable in her role. Joan ensured I received my epidural in a timely manner and escalated concerns when she became concerned about my baby's heart rate. Joan holistically cared for myself, my baby and also my partner, guiding him to the car in a hurry to grab his insulin before I was transferred to theatre, and helping him gown up appropriately. Joan then visited us in recovery to congratulate us and see our baby. I feel Joan is an absolute asset to the labour ward team and noticed the trust the doctors had in her, as they ask for her opinion on matters. I was reviewed by doctors Emma and Catriona who were lovely. They explained all their concerns to me and advised that an emergency c section was in my baby's best interests. I knew I was in safe hands with these doctors delivering our baby and I will be forever grateful for their prompt decision making and the trouble shooting they done, before deciding on the plan of care. Both doctors spoke to us after the delivery of our baby, congratulated us and ask if we had any questions about the decision made or the birth. Midwife Ashleigh also cared for us in the labour ward and recovery, and was very kind and reassuring to us both, staying after her shift to ensure all checks were completed and we were safe and well.

I am so grateful to the entire labour ward team and will never forget how safe they made me feel in such a terrifying situation.
