"Superb midwife"

I had to have my labour induced after my waters broke at 39 weeks. I also had just tested positive for covid. It was quite a scary time and there was no sign of contractions starting naturally. I went in and it was obvious the midwives were not at all daunted. I was immediately put at ease by their calmness and both me and baby were constantly monitored. There was a scary hour later in the day when baby's heart beat was all over the place but the consultant on duty made the right decision to stay calm and to wait rather than send me for an emergency caesarean which a junior doctor had suggested was necessary. Baby's heartbeat did calm down and by the time the night staff came on duty , it was back to normal and things seemed alot brighter. A young kind midwife came to look after me and she was superb. Kind, calm and efficient she administered a hormone drip telling me every step of the way what was happening with baby and double checking the heart trace with a colleague to be on the safe side. The contractions were very painful and they became frequent very quickly. I was on gas and air but cried out for an epidural several times. The midwife gently explained this was no longer possible as I was too far into the labour but she got me through each contraction with her calm and gentle instructions on how to breathe and my baby came out less than two hours after contractions started. Assisting the midwife that night was another midwife whose more tough manner was also essential at the time. She made sure that I pushed baby out myself rather than ask the doctor to use the ventouse cap which was out ready. A female doctor was also there to make the decision to make a cut but was also very clear that I could do this myself even when I said I couldn't. All three of them played their part in a safe delivery and I am very thankful. I know the name of the midwife who stuck with me through this and would like her to be thanked personally and to be told about this review. She even missed her break because she wanted to see it through and deliver the baby. The team on duty that night were also quick to administer antibiotics to baby who was at risk of infection due to having no waters for about 36 hours. Thankfully she didn't develop an infection but if she had I think their quick thinking would have protected her. I was also brought several drinks of warm camomile tea after the birth by the same midwife as she multi tasked efficiently making notes, checking on baby and caring for me. By now the covid had really set in and the tea really soothed my throat which was in agony. The next few days I was on a post labour ward with a few other mums who had tested positive. So many doctors and nurses were involved in the after care and all of them were prepared to get as close as necessary eventhough they were at risk of bring infected. I am very thankful for the care I received here and see this as a positive experience. Thank you all.
