"Cruel"

About: Calderdale Royal Hospital

6 weeks ago my husband had a heart attack and received excellent care, 3 weeks ago he was unwell and we visited a & e I joined him in all departments. Today he’s unwell again and I drove him to a & e, I wasn’t allowed in apparently hospital policy is ‘patients only’. How the hell can this be? How can they be so cruel? How can it depend on which staff are on duty that day to what ‘hospital policy’ is? Today I am livid and heartbroken in equal measure not knowing how my husband is or even if I’ll see him again.

Thank you for sharing your feedback.

My name is Jacqui and I work in the Trust Communications Team.

We do appreciate that for family members and loved ones it has been a difficult time as we have had restrictions on visiting and the national guidance has changed on a number of occasions.

Over the past few weeks we have seen a huge rise in the number of people coming to our A&E departments. As much as we would like to allow their loved ones to accompany them at what can be a stressful time, it has been exceedingly difficult to socially distance given the numbers of patients and their relatives.

This is why we have started to look at each patient's own situation at the time of their visit to A&E in terms of allowing a loved one to accompany them.

I do understand this may not be the answer you were hoping for. If you would like to explore this further, please contact our Patient Advice Team using this form: https://www.cht.nhs.uk/contact-us/feedback

Thank you

Jacqui Booth

Communications Officer
