"Care of my Ill two year old."

About: Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency Victoria Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a service user),

My child had been unwell throughout the week and had seen his GP at the practice. I was informed if he was to become any further unwell I was to take him to hospital (VHK).

I got in touch with NHS 24 to make sure I was doing the right thing as it was a Saturday and knowing the hospital is busy. NHS 24 informed me to take him straight up to A&E and that the information would be faxed over.

I was welcomed with the A&E receptionist asking what was wrong as NHS 24 hadn't faxed anything over as stated it would have been. The receptionist was lovely and told us we would be seen and to just to take a seat.

When sitting in the waiting room of A&E there was a nurse going round in their words just checking to see who the sickest patients are and if people should be here. The Nurse come over to me and said that my child looks very unwell. I then informed them yes that's why I'm here and told the nurse the issues that I had been having and that I had phoned NHS24 prior to coming to A&E as I knew it would be busy. The nurse told me that this wouldnt bump us up the queue and that we would still need to wait. I have no issues waiting for my Ill child to be seen, I know how busy hospital's are but I felt this was rather curt and unprofessional.

When seen, we were then taken through to resus. I asked for paracetamol for my child. He was given some but his name was not checked , no name band, no address check.

When taken to the children's ward I was greeted by a lovely nurse. I welcomed that, considering the previous nurse we had just had.

The Doctor came to see my child and again no name check. The doctor had the wrong notes and referred to my child by the wrong name.

Following discharge, a few days later the receptionist at my GP phoned me and informed me that an appointment needed to be made to check over my child's heart murmur,

The hospital doctor had put this issue on the letter to the GP but had not informed me of this issue about my son. I feel that this was very poor communication. I feel that no one actually cared that my child was unwell and had a general feeling of go away and just get on with it we are busy.

Dear importerfr77

Thank you for your feedback and I am sorry to read of your experience in the Emergency Department. Patient safety is very important and we have guidelines to follow to support this. I would be keen to discuss further with yourself regarding your experience in our department prior to transferring to the Children's Ward. If you feel this would be helpful, please contact me via email, Jamie.Doyle@nhs.scot. I do hope your child is doing well since this admission, and I sorry again that the experience has not been good. Look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards, Jamie Doyle.

Hello importerfr77

I'm really sorry to hear that you did not have a good experience when your son was recently in the Children's Ward. The Children's Ward team usually pride themselves on the friendly and professional welcome that children receive in the ward and will be very sorry to hear that on this occasion that was not your experience.

I would like to look into your experience to see what learning there is for our team on how things could have been done better. If you would like to contact me on lynette.mackenzie@nhs.scot with your son's details I can look into this and share my findings with you

Thank you for your frank feedback which is valuable in enabling our team to learn and make things better in the future

Best wishes

Lynette
