"Not kept informed about treatment"

About: Victoria Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

I had to go to Victoria Hospital after visiting out of hours at Queen Margaret hospital. I arrived at unit 2 of Victoria hospital at 22:00 hours, I was given pain relief at about 24:00 hrs.  At 7:00 I was asked to move to a larger ward where I had more pain relief at about 11:00.  I was taken for CT scan at about 2:00 pm and was told by the doctor that I had a large kidney stone.  They said I may get a stent and then walked away from me.

I later on moved to ward 54 nurse told me I was getting a stent as I had a large stone.  After settling into ward 54 the nurse told me that another nurse would be fitting a cannula as I was getting the stone blasted. I did not know what was happening.  Then the doctor returned and told me I would be discharged in two days time with pain relief,   I was shocked and spoke to the nurse who said nothing had been put in the records.

I was discharged this morning and had further words with the doctor. I also had to visit sae hospital 24/4 for camera for bowels, which showed blood in my stool.  They cancelled my appointment as I thought I was staying in to get kidney stone blasted.  I told the doctor this.  They didn't said anything but someone else contacted the  bowel cancer clinic and I am getting a  new appointment.

I have never been with this hospital before and shocked at the doctor's attitude. The  nurses were brilliant with me and helped me as much as possible.  I am now at home with pain relief and waiting to get letter to take me into blast the stone but I can’t get over the last 3 days.

Dear Tk1953

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback on care opinion. I am sorry to hear that your recent experience within Urology has been disappointing and that communication and behaviours have been poor. I would welcome an opportunity to discuss this further with you, to see if I can be of any assistance. You can contact me on my extension (20937) or email Siobhan.McIlroy@nhs.scot. Kind regards, Siobhan McIlroy, Clinical Nurse Manager (Urology).
