"Motorcycle Accident"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Accident & Emergency Scottish Air Ambulance Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as the patient),

I had a motorcycle accident on my way home from work recently. Although I was unconscious when the emergency service responders arrived on the scene, I was later informed that the SCAA team were there within minutes, followed by paramedics from the Scottish Ambulance Service. They kept me calm and reassured me, treated me at the roadside before moving me into the ambulance. The crew were very professional and got me through to Ninewells Hospital A&E.

The doctors and nurses at A&E were all very good, kept me informed, let me speak to my wife, who was waiting outside. I was sent for Xrays where the staff were very good to me as well. I stayed in A&E Observation overnight and as I was in a lot of pain, the nurses were very kind and checked on me regularly. The doctor kept me informed and sent me for CT scans the following day which confirmed further injuries.

All of the staff involved did a fantastic job. I only have two negatives - first of all, my wife wasn't allowed to come inside and had to wait in the car for hours before she could see me, and secondly, when I was being discharged the following day, they were unable to give me any pain relief away with me as the nurse said there was a shortage. Thankfully my GP practice was still open that afternoon so I was able to get a prescription from them.

Dear InjuredBiker

Thank you so much for sharing your experience on Care Opinion. I was really sorry to hear about your accident but pleased to read about the care you received from SCAA and SAS.

We are working hard to develop the care we provide to our major trauma patients and this includes dispatching the right resources to the right patients as quickly as possible and it sounds like this worked for you. As well as the clinical care you received, I am also pleased to hear that the paramedics were able to help you stay calm and provide you with reassurance in what must have been a very scary experience.

I would like to pass your thanks onto all of the paramedics who cared for you on that day but to do this, I will need a few more details about your accident. If you are able to provide me with some more details, you can contact me at martin.esposito@nhs.scot

I wish you well with your ongoing recovery and thanks again for sharing.

Take care.

Martin.

Dear InjuredBiker

Thank-you for taking the time to feedback about your recent experience, aspects of which involved the Emergency Department. I am glad to hear that you found the A&E staff helpful and that you were kept informed of what was happening around your care. I will share your positive comments with the ED team which I know they will really appreciate.

I understand completely about the aspects of your experience that you felt could have been improved upon. We currently have ongoing liaison with our pharmacy colleagues as there is a current issue with supply of certain medication packs for take home from the ED. I'm really sorry this happened but hope this will get resolved soon.

In the ED due to ongoing Covid incidence we are only allowing relatives into the acute clinical area if there is particular communication issues or additional support needs. I appreciate how this can be upsetting for the patient and their relatives. This is undergoing ongoing review as the Covid situation changes

Thanks again for your feedback and I hope you are recovering well
