"Husband's care in the emergency department"

About: Borders General Hospital / Accident & Emergency Borders General Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics (Ward 9) Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a relative),

My husband fell off a ladder and injured himself. He was in a lot of pain as he had dislocated and broken his right wrist, broken his left arm and had a potential spinal injury. He came in to a very busy emergency department by ambulance and was put straight into a side room.

When he arrived there was queries over whether he had broken his back so was on a spinal board, which required a number of personnel to move him. Staff were kind and patient, as he was screaming in pain which can't have been pleasant for the nurses and doctors who attended him. He was seen quickly for an xray and then transferred into ED 2. Dot and Linda, the nurses who attended him, were very calm in a very stressful situation, and ensured he was as comfortable as he could be and made conversation with him to try to take his mind off the pain. They are truly a credit to NHS Borders. Under such extreme demands of the department, they stayed professional, calm and approachable.

There were a number of doctors who saw him in close succession, where they confirmed he had 2 broken arms and his back was very badly bruised. Unfortunately, I did not get all the medics names but Lauren was very helpful in ensuring we knew what was happening and next steps being taken. All of the medical staff that attended my husband were helpful in keeping us informed. My husband was taken for surgery, he was very anxious as he had never had a general anaesthetic before and the anaesthetist was very good in alleviating his worries. Following surgery he was on ward 9, whose staff members were equally as caring before he was transferred to EDI the following day.

Dear Happyparents, thank you so much for taking the time to use Care Opinion. I'm sorry your husband had such an awful accident, it sounds like he had significantly serious injuries. I'm delighted however to hear that his experience was as positive as it could be given the circumstances. We are working really hard in very difficult circumstances and we do strive really hard to provide the best care we can but this can be very challenging so getting this lovely feedback is a real tonic for the staff. I will pass on your thanks to all the staff involved, they will be delighted to receive this. I do hope your husband is on his way to a full recovery and thankyou again for taking time to use Care Opinion.

Kind regards

Lesley Anderson, Senior Charge Nurse, Emergency Dept, Borders General Hospita.
