"Intuitive Recovery taught me that I am in control"

About: CGL Birmingham

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I started drinking once I had left school but this was only really on a social level to begin with. I went on a yearlong journey around Africa a few years later, this is when I started to notice alcohol had become a problem for me. Whilst away, as soon as I was awake I would have a drink and then I would start my day. When I returned my family started noticing how much the drinking had increased as I was often buying a bottle of spirits each day.

I have had lots of issues due to drinking, but my biggest one is not remembering what I’ve done and reaching a point of not realizing how drunk I was most of the time. After a while I agreed with my family that I needed help so I attended a rehab facility. My time there was really helpful and I stopped drinking for 3 months.

Unfortunately I thought I had beaten my problem and I tried drinking with control, but this didn’t last long. I then met a lady called Diane who was from CGL, she told me about Intuitive Recovery and how they teach skills that could really help me.

Intuitive Recovery taught me that I am in control and I can say yes or no to my thoughts. I learnt about the different sections of the brain as well as being able to transpose my thoughts and feelings around alcohol. I have now completed 2 courses with Intuitive Thinking Skills and I am able to take back control and live my life free of this problem.

I am feeling very positive for the future.

Dear Geokw49

Thank you for getting in touch with us to share your feedback with us.

I'm Lydia and I'm part of the team who listens and responds to people's feedback.

I feel like your story provides a heart-warming insight into how it is absolutely possible, to take back control of your thoughts and behaviours when it comes to alcohol.

It must have been an extremely challenging time for you whilst you were drinking a bottle of spirits each day, and I can only imagine the negative impact this must have had on your physical and psychological wellbeing. It was good to read that you had family around you who were willing to speak to you about what they were noticing and that they encouraged you into seeking support.

It's great to hear that Diane was able to put you in touch with Intuitive Thinking Skills so that you could benefit from their support. I will share your feedback with her so she knows what a positive impact this had on your recovery.

We've shared your story with Phil who works for Intuitive Thinking Skills and he has asked for this message to be shared with you:

"Thank you for the lovely feedback and how you found the courses useful. We are thrilled to hear that you have been able to use the skills from our courses to be able to say no to those drinking thoughts. It’s much easier to solve a problem when you fully understand it which is why we touch on the scientific approach to ‘our thinking’ as being able to separate those drinking thoughts from your ‘IT’ part (Mid-brain) from those of your ‘I’ part (Neo Cortex) is key to this as it is always YOU that has that final decision. Phil"

I hope you feel proud of what you have achieved in your recovery and that you continue to use all of the knowledge and learning your have picked up on your journey towards abstinence.

Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with us. I wish you all the very best for the future, and that you continue to carve out the positive life you have planned and deserve.

Best wishes

Lydia
