My consultant recently retired and it got me thinking about the care I have had from him and the service over the last few years. I have passed on my personal thanks but wanted to share here also. I have had an experience of real, genuine kindness and thoughtful holistic care with the asthma clinic. This made a big difference to me as I felt listened to and considered as an individual which I think is unfortunately but very understandably rare these days in pressured services. I noticed that I was consistently spoken to with warmth by everyone in the department and the first few times this happened I was quite surprised because it felt so different to other departments I have been seen in. It feels to me as though a culture has been established in the department of kindness and respect which I saw in the consultants, nurses, health care assistants. Everyone spoke positively of each other too. It is a really busy clinic so the fact that this is the atmosphere there is really admirable. It seems that the aim is to offer every person crossing the threshold of the department is offered thoughtful, quality care, and communication was always clear and considered. I have not always had good experiences of care and so I am really grateful to have had a good experience here. We talk a lot about trauma informed care in mental health services at the moment and this department felt trauma informed to me even though it probably wasn't designed with this particular intention in mind. The general emotional tone of the clinic helped me to feel safe and looked after and of course that has an impact on how people engage and an impact more broadly. So thank you.
