"Restrictions in A&E and Triage"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

In early April I was told by 111 to attend A&E due to bleeding and pain in early pregnancy. On arrival I was told my husband couldn’t be in the waiting area with me which I expected, however there were numerous people who had relatives sitting with them and even some with more than one relative, I understand there being exceptions for some patients but these patients seemed just as capable of being on their own. After being seen in A&E I was then sent up to triage for more testing and was told I was suffering from a miscarriage. I think there should absolutely be exceptions to the rules because finding out you are losing your baby is heartbreaking enough without being on your own when finding out.

I have no issues with my general care as all nurses, midwives, doctors and CSWs were amazing I just think the rules on relatives need to be more flexible.

Dear SD94

I am so very sorry for the loss of your baby. This must be an exceptionally stressful and emotional time for you and your hubby.

May I request you contact our Patient Affairs colleagues to discuss your concern regarding waiting areas during Covid-19 restrictions.

You can either email: PatientAffairs.Wishaw@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk or telephone: 01698 366558.

I wish you and your husband well for the future.

Jean
