"Listened to at my less traumatic hysteroscopy"

About: Royal Hallamshire Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I had to attend a hospital a few weeks ago for a hysteroscopy, on researching what was likely to be done I realised that the procedure was almost identical to one I'd had previously where I found the experience extremely traumatic and was offered no pain relief.

I explained to my new consultant Mr. Keriakos about what had happened to me at a different hospital previously and how fearful I was. The consultant was very good over the phone and assured me  I could have gas & air, pain relief to be taken prior to the procedure and they would use the smallest scope they could and at any time I couldn't cope they would stop if I asked.

The consultant was as good as their word. On the phone appointment they did not sound too impressed by my earlier experience. My fear & anxiety was off the scale the closer I got to my new appointment. I had to have this done as they were checking in case it was anything more serious than a large fibroid and because of my symptoms so I knew it made sense - I was so terrified after what happened at the other place, I couldn't get it out of my mind.

However, this time I was kept informed, I was listened to by a lovely consultant who took the time to phone me to reassure me, he informed his entire team of what had happened to me and their care of me was first class throughout. I was told to take painkillers prior to the appointment, once there I was given a Buscopan injection to help with cramps, a heat pad to help keep the muscles relaxed and was given Entonox gas & air during the procedure.

They did the Hysteroscopy and took a couple of biopsies and all I felt was a little period-type pain when the biopsies were done.

Hello Deborah,

Thank you for your comments - the care I received at the Jessops was some of the best I've ever received. Everyone in the team involved was fantastic throughout. This should be the standard all hospitals should work too, sadly it's often not the case as my previous experience showed. Thanks and all the best
