"Things improved once I was with CGL"

About: Change Grow Live / North West Recovery Service - Edinburgh

(as the patient),

I had a situational crisis in 2018. This resulted in me having a criminal conviction and turning to alcohol to numb the pain.

It started off small and snowballed until it was out of control. During this time I lost two jobs, spent 5 days in the Royal Edinburgh Hospital and had multiple suicide attempts. After the last attempt I self-referred to CGL. The alcohol gave me relief for a very short period and was quickly followed by shame, self-loathing and disgust. It very nearly cost me my family.

Once I was in the system with CGL things improved. I attended meetings when I could and was eventually started on medication. I’ve been sober since July 2021. I’ve been discharged to the care of my GP now with the understanding I can reach out to CGL should I start to struggle.

My intention over the coming months is to find a group to attend so I have a support network in place if/when I need it. It would have been great for me if there was a meeting outwith office hours as I am now back working.

Congratulations on your sobriety. This is a great personal inspirational story about how recovery is possible.

Despite your struggle and much adversity you managed to turn things around with some support and now you continue your recovery independently. This is an epic achievement.

CGL NW are very grateful that you have taken the time to share your story here, thank you, we hope you continue to attend the meetings as you will be a positive inspiration to others and as you have stated you will also continue benefiting by helping others. We wish you all the best going forward with your own recovery.

You can call the office and we will be able to advise you on where to find out of hours local community meetings that may help you establish some beneficial recovery connections.

Thank you.
